On my blog Possessionista, I’m often asked what Emily does for a living. And after last week’s episode of the Bachelorette in London, I think there’s no question that we now know what Emily’s chosen profession is:

Seriously, I haven’t seen that many trench coats since I saw Sherlock Holmes.

And sure, everyone’s buzzing about Kalon’s “baggage” comment, but I was more concerned over Jef’s comparison of Ricki to a Chloe bag. Could this relationship ever work? Anyone who loves Emily knows that her Chloe bag was during the “Brad Years” and Emily’s overpriced bag of choice these days is Proenza Schouler. (Totally worth it, by the way)

But maybe Jef just doesn’t know how to pronounce Proenza Schouler.

Most men don’t.

My favorite fashion moment this week was Emily’s blink and you missed it rose gold sequin dress by Lovers and Friends. She wore it on her evening date with Jef, but we never got a good look at it because it was so cold in London while they were filming that Emily was constantly camouflaged in various flaxseed colored trenches and blankets.

Last week my own personal Kalon, a reader named Allissa, accused me of being too nice in this column. The truth is I don’t hate anything Emily is wearing (except that butterfly dress. I hated that thing) but I’m not excited by any of it either.

Emily’s grey lace dress by Maggy London for tea with Jeff was the equivalent to butter chicken: bland and predictable when you have a taste for something spicy and exotic. And her blue, one shoulder rose ceremony dress was perfectly lovely for the mother of the groom, but I guess I just keep holding out for the most. dramatic. rose. ceremony. dress. ever.

I think I personally prefer Emily when she’s in her more casual garb: a fringe pair of must-have Koolaburra wedges while sightseeing with Ricky, or her baseball tee and combat boots later in the hotel were the most intriguing pieces to me this week.

And not just because I could never afford the sequin Randi Rahm custom dress she wore with Sean or the studded Gomez Gracia dress she wore to go “hood rat” on Kalon during the group date.

I can’t put my finger on why so many people are underwhelmed by this season’s fashion. Whether it’s just simple and sophisticated (and we’re tacky and over-the-top) or that we set our expectations too high based on Emily’s performance on the Bachelor (let’s be honest, there were a few misses there, too)  but I’m hopeful from the previews next week that there’s at least one really stellar dress in our future – a white skintight dress that looks like a constellation threw up on it – in the best way possible.

I’d love to hear from you. What do you love or hate from this season’s bachelorette fashion? Where do you think they get it right? Where do you think they get it wrong? And what would you like to see Emily wear?

  1. With the rumored $350,000 budget for her apparel she should look outstanding. Undoubtedly others would have different selections, but that is what makes the fashion industry.

  3. I am pretty underwhelmed with her fashion this season. I wish she would go out on a limb with some of her choices. My favorite Bach’s fashion wise are definitely Jillian and Ashley. Their outfits were fun, edgy and young. I get that she is a mom but she is still 26, and I have seen pictures of her outside of this season and she normally has a little edge to her wardrobe.

  4. Can you please ID the trench coat with the pink scarf tie? A lot of people have been asking for this and some other items on your possessionista blog and it would be great if you could respond already

  5. Would you please punch Fleiss in the face for even considering boring homely Trista for anything ever again Bachelor franchise related. Let her fall off a high mountain. Annoying freak she is. More than anything else she is mean deep to the bone. And jealous.

  8. I love your wit, and I’m glad you are showing more wisdom and intelligence in your comment about Jef and the Chloe handbag in this blog. Did you know that his company sponsored or worked with the Fashion week people – see his instagrams. That is why he probably knew that name and explains why he’s behind b/c he probably knew about it back then. He also knows and worked with the owners of New Orlean Saints. Can he be considered a hetersexual again? I was really disappointed, especially given your connection to the fashion industry that you would make comments about a guys’s sexuality based on something so ignorant and ridiculous as well as the spelling of his name. Google or even look it up on Twitter – it’s everywhere. Are those guys gays? I went to a zoo the other day, am I an animal now? Jeffrey is his name and really, his nickname should be Jef, b/c he took out the “frey” of it. It’s his nickname, the guy didn’t give himself a femail impersonator name of “Butterflies Lovelace.” Come on! Please stop with the ignorant homophobic comments and color everything that is not related to sports gay. Too insulting to too many groups on too many levels.

Do you understand how insulting and offensive you and the other twitter people like Robert Mills sounded to even hint – not that he is gay b/c that is not insulting, but that he might be gay and on this show which in turns implies that he is either a liar and con artist or clueless about himself. That goes to his character and is very insulting on way too many levels to list. You really owe Jef and your twitter followers an apology for that. I hope you did it already because I stopped reading your tweets after that comment and was going to stop reading your blog as well, but I thought I give you one last chance and I’m glad my instincts on you that you were deep down a decent person turned out to be true after all – now please do better in the future.

  9. Emily is a sweet person, and her bachelorette wardrobe is exclusive. In a way she is beautiful, but she looks older than she is- and older than most of her guys. Her outfits underline this impression- as if she is a forty-year-old trying to look young. Her makeup is too heavy, and I suppose there is too much bootox on her face.

  10. Emily’s fashion sense underwhelmed me as well. She dresses too old especially at the Rose Ceremonies. If the gown she wore in Croatia was a cocktail dress, it might have worked. Now I wonder if the $350K wardrobe budget is even worth it. Yes she’s a mom but can someone yell at Emily and tell her to quit dressing up like she’s in her 40′s? Loving your blog btw.

  11. Funny, I’m not sure where you think I called Jef gay? I never inferred or suggested that. Being able to pronounce the name Proenza Schouler isn’t a litmus test for sexuality, it’s a difficult name to pronounce regardless of sexual orientation.
